JERUSALEM — Israel has warned its nationals against visiting
Tunisia.

The National Security Council has warned of a threat of an attack on
Israelis or Jews in the North African state. The council’s Counter-Terrorism
Bureau said the attack could take place during a Jewish holiday in May.

“The NSCCTB notes that there is a high concrete threat regarding travel to Tunisia and recommends avoiding visiting there,” the council said.

In a statement on May 3, the council said an insurgency strike was
expected on the annual Jewish festival of Lag B’Omer on May 9-10.

A likely target could be Jewish sites on the Tunisian island of Djerba, visited by 40,000 tourists.

“Following an updated assessment, the National Security Council
Counter-Terrorism Bureau has on May 3 decided to reiterate the existing travel advisory regarding Tunisia in light of plans to perpetrate terrorist attacks against Israeli/Jewish targets there ahead of the upcoming annual Lag B’Omer pilgrimage to Djerba,” the council said.

Israel has issued repeated warnings of an insurgency
attack on Tunisia. Officials said the Islamist revolt in Tunisia has
increased threats on the Jewish community.

Meanwhile, the Israel Security Agency said Palestinian insurgency attacks dropped
during April 2012 compared to the previous month. ISA cited 70 attacks in
April, compared to 229 in March.

“The decrease is most prominent in the Gaza Strip,” ISA said.

In a statement on May 3, the agency said attacks from the Gaza Strip
dropped from 157 attacks in March to nine in April. ISA also reported a
decrease in attacks in the West Bank and Jerusalem — from 43 to 36, and 29
to 24 — respectively, from March to April.

“Despite that, on the eve of the Jewish holiday Passover, two rockets
were launched from Sinai to Eilat on April 5,” the agency said.
The agency reported the injury of three Israelis in stabbing attacks,
two of which took place in Jerusalem. Most of the attacks in the Jerusalem
and West Bank comprised of firebombs.
