TEL AVIV — The Israel Army has resumed fire into neighboring Syria.

On March 24, the Israel Army fired into Syria and destroyed a military
post on the Golan Heights. The Israel Army said the operation was in
response to Syrian fire toward an Army patrol along the border region.

“Our understanding is that it wasn’t stray fire,” Israeli military
spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said.

Israeli military sources said Army patrols came under fire at least
twice within a day. They said it was not clear whether the fire stemmed from the Syrian Army or from Sunni rebels amid an advance by the regime of President Bashar Assad in the Golan Heights.

The Israel Army fired a Spike non-line-of-sight rocket at the Syrian
Army post, the sources said. Two Syrians were believed to have been injured.

“The military returned fire at a Syrian post after an IDF patrol came
under machine-gun fire,” the Israeli military said. “The target was
destroyed using precision fire.”

So far, the Israel Army has not sent infantry units into Syria. The
sources said the Army determined that precision-guided missiles was
effective in quelling Syrian fire.

“Any fire from the Syrian side will be answered immediately by silencing
the sources of fire when we identify them,” Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon
said.
