Israeli intelligence agencies clash over failure to predict Hamas War

TEL AVIV — Before being told last week to settle their differences out of the public eye, Israel’s top intelligence agencies had erupted into an open feud over responsibility for the Hamas war in mid-2014.

In what reflected growing tension amid official inquiries, Military Intelligence and the Israel Security Agency had begun issuing claims over their respective roles prior to the 50-day war with Hamas in July and August 2014.

“We all have a national responsibility for Israel’s security, and we must continue to fully cooperate for the sake of citizens’ security,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has sought to end the feud, said. …

The ISA asserted that Hamas’ military wing planned the war in cooperation with Iran while Military Intelligence insisted that the conflict marked an unplanned escalation.
