The Israeli military said the 23-year-old resident of the Arab-Israeli village of Jaljuliya landed on the Syrian side of the border fence in the western part of Daraa district. The area where the man landed is reportedly controlled by Shuhada al-Yarmouk, a jihadist group affiliated with ISIL.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Oct. 25 that the man’s citizenship would be revoked.

“We are constantly fighting ISIL, Jabhat al-Nusra and other terrorist organizations. Yesterday an Israeli civilian crossed our border in the Golan Heights into Syria to join the ranks of the enemy. We will act to nullify his citizenship,” Netanyahu said.

Israel’s military has reported that dozens of Israeli citizens have joined or have attempted to join ISIL.

The Nazareth District Court last week sentenced an Arab-Israeli man to three and a half years in prison after he was convicted of participating in ISIL operations in Fallujah, Iraq.
