Israel: Violence down, but trafficking in arms and drugs increasing in Arab sector

JERUSALEM — Israel has become concerned over increasing unrest from
its Arab minority.

Officials said the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has
been tracking increased crime and political unrest in the Arab sector.

Israel will be beefing up police presence in Arab areas.

The officials said the greatest danger of Arab unrest was in the north near the border with Lebanon.

“There must be a greater presence of law enforcement throughout the
area,” an official said.

On May 7, Netanyahu expressed support for a plan to increase the police presence in the Arab sector and northern Israel. The prime minister said the plan would be submitted to the Cabinet within two weeks.

“Prime Minister Netanyahu stressed that the government is committed to continue the struggle against crime and severe violence,” a statement by Netanyahu’s office said.

The government has reported a 30 percent drop in killings as well as a
decline in street violence. But officials reported rising tension and crime
within the Arab sector, particularly in the area of drugs and arms
trafficking.
