TEL AVIV — Israel’s military has developed a digital mobilization
system.

Military sources said the hundreds of thousands of Israeli reservists
would be called up via the Internet.

The sources said reserve soldiers would be given an access code to a secure military website that would detail their tour of duty.

“It would save lots of needless phone calls and direct our manpower
toward greater efficiency,” a source said.

For decades, reservists were notified of their military duty through
regular mail. Questions or requests for delays were processed over the
telephone via liaison officers.

Under the new system. all information would be relayed through e-mail or the Israel Defense Forces website. The sources said requests for deferment, equipment or meetings with officers would be arranged electronically.

In the next phase, the military would send mobilization data to
reservists through smart phones. The sources said the second phase could be
launched by 2015.
