Israel projects significantly expanded Mediterranean gas reserves

TEL AVIV — Israel has assessed that its new natural gas reserves
would significantly expand over the next two years.

Officials said Israel’s potential gas reserves in the Mediterranean Sea
would reach 1 trillion cubic meters. They said proven gas reserves were
determined at 300 billion cubic meters, most of it around the Tamar field in
the eastern Mediterranean.

“We can cooperate in generating this new-found energy and use it for the
benefit of the entire region,” Israeli President Shimon Peres said.

Israel Natural Gas Authority director-general Yehosua Stern told a
conference in December that gas reserves were expected to increase by
453 billion cubic meters after the completion of production tests at the
Leviathan field. Stern said another 550 billion cubic meters would be
discovered off the coast of the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon.
