TEL AVIV — After a lull of two months, Israel has again been attacked from neighboring Egypt.

On Oct. 22, the Israeli military reported an attack on the army near the southern border with Egypt. The military said two soldiers were injured by anti-tank missile and light weapons fire from Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.

“About 2 p.m., we had shots and an anti-tank missile fired at a vehicle that was on the border,” Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said.

The attack was the first from Sinai since the 50-day war with the Gaza Strip in July and August 2014. During the war, rockets were fired from Sinai toward the southern Israeli port of Eilat.

“IDF [Israel Defense Forces] is currently trying to gather intelligence to determine who carried out this activity,” Lerner said.

Officials said the attackers were initially thought to be members of Ansar Beit Maqdis, the leading Islamic insurgency group in Egypt. Later, however, military sources identified the shooters as Egyptian drug smugglers. They said three of the purported smugglers were killed by the Israel Army unit.

“There was cooperation between Egypt and Israel,” a source said.

Hours later, Israel reported a Palestinian insurgency strike in Jerusalem. Officials said a car plowed into pedestrians and a baby was killed.

“The driver apparently tried to flee on foot and was shot and wounded by a policeman from the Jerusalem district,” Israeli police spokeswoman Luba Samri said.
