Israel buys up surplus U.S. Hummers left in Iraq

TEL AVIV — The Israel Army has procured thousands of combat vehicles
from the United States.

Newly-purchased Hummers and trucks will arrive in Israel and undergo testing before being stored away in the IDF’s emergency warehouses.

The Israeli military said it was acquiring 2,500 Hummer combat vehicles from U.S. Army surplus. The military said the Hummers were left behind in Iraq in wake of the U.S. troop withdrawal in December 2011.

Officials said the Hummer deal was concluded amid high-level
consultations by the U.S. Defense Department and Israel’s Defense Ministry.

They said a senior Pentagon official, Defense Undersecretary Frank Kendall, discussed the Hummer as well as other options for Israeli procurement of U.S. military surplus.

The Hummers would be accompanied by tactical trucks for delivery in
Israel by October. Military sources said the vehicles
contained low mileage and would be tested before storage.

The military did not disclose the price of the surplus U.S. vehicles.
But the sources said the vehicles were being offered at less than one-third
the standard price of the platforms.

Israel has also been examining the purchase of other U.S. military
surplus. The sources cited tents, generators and other equipment.
