Israel buying German destroyers to protect oil assets in Mediterranean

LONDON — Israel has been preparing to purchase naval combat vessels from Germany.

A leading German daily said Berlin has agreed to an Israeli request for two naval destroyers. The newspaper, Bild, reported the cost of procurement at 1 billion euro.

Bild said the German ships would be equipped with torpedoes and designed for maritime security operations. The newspaper said the Israel Navy required the platforms to protect Israel’s new offshore natural gas infrastructure in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

The Israeli request was said to have marked a priority of the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
