TEL AVIV — The Israel Army has been enhancing its security barrier
along the Golan Heights.

Military sources said the Army has been installing advanced systems
along the Syrian frontier of the Golan Heights. They said the systems were
meant to track people and vehicles at least five kilometers into Syria.

“This border fence will take many of the elements from the project that
is nearly completed along the Egyptian border,” a source said.

The upgrade of the Golan barrier began in February amid attempts by
Sunni rebels to infiltrate Israel. The sources said the Army has bolstered
forces to accelerate the upgrade of the security fence.

The latest project has included the installation of advanced
reconnaissance systems and motion sensors. The sources said the barrier would be monitored by a regional as well as local command and control centers.

“We see infiltration and sniper fire as the main threats,” the source
said.

The sources said the Army has deployed a range of combat units near the Syrian frontier. They said the border fence would be bolstered by patrols by
the Army’s canine unit as well as artillery forces.

“We see terror organizations that are increasingly gaining footholds in
the territory and they are fighting against Assad,” Israeli Chief of Staff
Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz said on March 11. “Guess what? We’ll be next in line.”
