Military sources said Israel endorsed an Egyptian request for about 1,000 additional troops in Sinai. They said two battalions of infantry special forces were allowed to deploy in northeastern Sinai to battle the Islamic revolt.

“The request will help Israeli security as well and increase cooperation,” a source said.

This marked the fourth Egyptian request over the last two years for exemptions of the demilitarization of eastern Sinai.

Since 2013, Israel allowed the Egyptian military to deploy up to 20,000 troops as well as F-16 multi-role fighters, AH-64 Apache attack helicopters and M1A1 main battle tanks.

The sources said the latest Egyptian request would allow for the deployment of up to a squadron of attack helicopters in Sinai. They said the squadron would consist of the U.S.-origin Apaches, 10 of which arrived in Egypt from the United States in November 2014.

“Under the agreement, Egypt would provide notification of air operations near the Israeli border,” the source said.
