Iraqi sources asserted that a commander in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was the target of a suicide bombing by ISIL in January 2015. The sources said IRGC-Quds Force chief was seriously injured in the bombing of his convoy outside the northern Iraqi city of Samara.

“He was flown to a hospital in Teheran and was believed to be in serious condition,” a source said.

On Jan. 14, Israel’s Channel 2 television said Suleimani’s deputy was now in charge of Iranian operations in Iraq. Channel 2 said Suleimani was the latest target by ISIL in its campaign against IRGC, believed to oversee more than 5,000 troops in Iraq.

On Jan. 11, Gen. Mahdi Nirozi, a senior IRGC commander, was killed in an ISIL suicide strike in Iraq. Nirozi was said to have commanded more than 1,000 soldiers from IRGC’s Basij, trained for border security and anti-riot operations.

Iran has not confirmed the attack on Suleimani, who has not been seen or heard over the last few days. Teheran was said to have conducted both air and ground operations against ISIL, particularly around Samara, which contains a large Shi’ite community.
