Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) suicide bombers led a thee-pronged attack Saturday on Iraq’s largest refinery, a senior army officer said.

Refinery“Three suicide attackers were able to reach the entrances of the refinery. Two were killed but one managed to blow himself up,” the officer said.

The Basiji refinery has been the site of frequent fierce battles since ISIL’s dramatic foray through Iraq last year.

ISIL militants attacked the site from three sides including the Al-Bujwari village to the south and a housing compound for employees to the west.

“Three suicide attackers were able to reach the entrances of the refinery. Two were killed but one managed to blow himself up,” the army officer said.

Although ISIL release images of its Humvees advancing inside the site, officials said Iraqi forces had regained control of the entrances and the entire site.

“Daesh is trying to send the message that they are everywhere but in fact they are defeated and cannot advance,” he said.
