Fierce clashes are being waged to the north of Fallujah between the Iraqi Army and Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) militants, a day after an ambush killed an Iraqi general and three staff officers.
ISIL militants used a bulldozer packed with explosive to kill the commander of the army’s 1st Division, Gen. Hassan Abbas Toufan, and the officers on April 24.
Ten Iraqi soldiers also were killed in an attack against the nearby battalion headquarters.
ISIL militants on April 25 paraded another officer and three captured Iraqi soldiers through the streets of Fallujah in a pickup truck.
As army troops and tanks rushed to the battle on April 25, ISIL militants took partial control of a dam at the southern end of Lake Thirthar.
A militant video posted online shows ISIL fighters moving about freely on the Al-Thirthar dam, which serves as a flood control for Baghdad and other cities.
Meanwhile, on the far western side of Anbar Province, three suicide car bombers targeted a checkpoint on Iraq’s border with Jordan on April 25, killing three Iraqi soldiers and wounding 10.
