A group of young men who posted photos and videos on Facebook of life in Mosul, Iraq under Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) have been detained by the terror group.

Iraqi official Abdulraheem Al-Shimary told NBC News on Nov. 10 that “more than 50” young men have been detained by ISIL jihadists this week after posting photos of Mosul’s streets, which included images of locations bombed by the Iraqi air force. Shimary also said the young men posted news online about the deaths of ISIL fighters.

“All were taken into unknown places,” he said. “We are afraid ISIL will kill them.”

Shimary said that ISIL had blocked Internet services and destroyed communication towers after taking control of Mosul in June 2014.

“Some young men were able to restore the Internet services, without knowing that ISIL had the ability to know that,” Shimary said. “Those young men started to use Internet and shared many pictures, videos and news on their Facebook pages …. ISIL were able to track those young men and arrested them.”

A senior Iraqi security official said the Facebook posts were a “big help” to Iraqi forces and helped paint a “clear picture” of the situation on the ground in Mosul.

The officials confirmed that the young men were arrested in Mosul “because they were able to reconnect the city to the world.”
