Iranian warships reach Yemen as Saudis first suspend, and then continue air strikes

Only hours after Saudi Arabia announced the conclusion of a month of daily air strikes against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, new strikes hit targets in Taiz, Yemen as a convoy of Iranian warship arrived in the area.

The Saudi-led Arab coalition and the Houthis had agreed to enter a “political process” during which the air campaign and fighting on the ground would be suspended.

But heavy fighting in the southwestern city of Taiz led to new strikes according to officials.

Iranian Navy Commander Rear Adm. Habibollah Sayyari said the Iran ship were in the Gulf of Aden to counter piracy.

“There is no need for our flotilla of warships to dock in Yemen, but we are present in the Gulf of Aden powerfully and at present, our 34th fleet has been sent to the region,” Sayyari said.

There were also news reports of fighting in other parts of the country including the city of Aden.

The Sunni-led Arab League states imposed an air and sea embargo on Yemen after launching the air campaign last month when it was clear that Iran had gained control via the Houthis militia of the impoverished country on the southern border of Saudi Arabia.

The Pentagon announced that U.S. warships had been sent to the area after reports that an Iranian convoy with military and other supplies was en route to Yemen. But a Pentagon spokesman said the U.S. ships had no orders to intercept the Iranian convoy.
