Iranian oil pipeline, refinery damaged by series of explosions

NICOSIA — Iran has reported a series of explosions at crude oil
wells.

Officials said an oil field in southwestern Iran was rocked by three
explosions within 24 hours. The explosions on Oct. 28, in which at least one
worker was killed, severely damaged a pipeline as well as a refinery in the
Khuzestan province.

“The pipeline busted because its wall had been thinned due to
corrosion,” National Iranian South Co. managing director Abdul Amir
Hoveyzavi said.

Iranian security forces have been fighting Arab and Kurdish insurgents
in Khuzestan in operations that Teheran asserted were directed by
Britain and the United States. In late 2010, the Abadan oil refinery was
bombed during a visit by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
