Iran threatens to cancel nuclear deal if UN continues probe of military dimensions

Iran will cancel the nuclear agreement with world powers unless an investigation into its past weapons research is dropped.

Adm. Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said on Nov. 29 that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) must end its investigation into the military dimensions issue, AFP reported.

The head of the IAEA, Yukiya Amano, had said that a report into the possible military dimensions of Iran’s nuclear activities would not be “black and white.” The probe is said to be part of the secret “side agreements” required to conclude the agreement.

The IAEA is said to be investigating allegations that Iran, at least until 2003, carried out research on producing nuclear weapons.

Teheran has always insisted its nuclear program is for peaceful energy production and medical purposes.

The Supreme National Security Council reports to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final word on all policy decisions.

The IAEA recently said that Teheran violated the terms of the nuclear deal by increasing its stockpile of low-enriched uranium in the past three months by 460.2 kilograms. A senior diplomat, however, said the increase was the result of a normal fluctuation and “there is nothing special in that.”

Reports this month also revealed that Iran had stopped dismantling its centrifuges at the Natanz and Fordow uranium enrichment plants, also said to be a violation of the terms of the July deal.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has threatened to cancel the deal if the United States imposes any new sanctions unrelated to Teheran’s nuclear program.
