A U.S. military official told AFP on Dec. 29 that Iran tested unguided rockets that came within close proximity of three American warships in the Strait of Hormuz, including the USS Harry S Truman aircraft carrier.

“We look at this firing so close to the ships as highly provocative,” said the military official, who was not immediately authorized to be named.

The official said the rockets were fired on Dec. 26 from an Iranian navy “fast inshore attack craft” that was in Omani waters. None of the U.S. warships were forced to take evasive action, the official added.

Iran has on several occasions threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz to oil tanker traffic. A third of the world’s oil passes through the strait.

The Obama administration said Iran’s closing of the strait would cross a “red line” and be grounds for U.S. military action.

Iran’s recent tests of nuclear-capable ballistic missiles have been determined to be a violation of a UN Security Council resolution.
