Iran says U.S. has no objections to installation of advanced centrifuges

NICOSIA — Iran has asserted that the West accepted the use of Teheran’s latest gas centrifuge for the nation’s nuclear program.

Officials said the P5+1 approved Iran’s enhancement of its nuclear energy and research program. They said this included the testing and installation of advanced centrifuges for uranium enrichment.

“The [use of] new generation of centrifuges for research purposes was the most important remaining issue in the talks between Iran and the P5+1 in recent months,” Alaeddin Boroujerdi, chairman of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said.

In an interview that appeared on the Iranian parliament’s website on Jan. 13, Boroujerdi said P5+1 accepted Teheran’s demand to install new-generation centrifuges during a session in Geneva, Switzerland on Jan. 12. He said this led to plans to implement the nuclear agreement, including a suspension of 20 percent uranium enrichment, on Jan. 20.

“Finally we finalized the agreement between us and the P5+1 on how to implement the first step of the joint plan of action, and the two sides came to a single interpretation on how to put the agreement into effect,” Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said.

The United States and the European Union welcomed the latest agreement.
Neither disputed Iran’s claim that it would continue the installation of
advanced centrifuges, said to enrich uranium at a rate of at least four
times that of Iran’s IR-1.

“With today’s agreement we have made concrete progress,” U.S. President
Barack Obama said. “I welcome this important step forward.”

Officials said P5+1 also drafted secret terms of the nuclear agreement
with Iran in a 30-page document. Araqchi said the so-called non-paper dealt
with Iranian nuclear research as well as implementation of the accord.

“No facility will be closed,” Araqchi told the official Iranian Students
News Agency. “Enrichment will continue and qualitative and nuclear research
will be expanded. All research into a new
generation of centrifuges will continue.”
