“Commander Hassan Shateri was martyred en route from Damascus to Beirut at the hands of Zionist regime mercenaries and backers,” IRGC spokesman Ramezan Sheriff said.

Officials said Shateri was driving from Damascus to Beirut when he was ambushed by unknown gunmen.

Shateri was identified as responsible for Iranian reconstruction projects in southern Lebanon, dominated by Hizbullah.

Shateri was given a military funeral in Teheran on Feb. 14 and flown to
Semnan for burial, scheduled on the following day.

The funeral was said to have been attended by IRGC commanders, including Gen. Qassam Suleimani, head of the corps’ Quds Force.
