NICOSIA — Iran is preparing to launch a natural gas pipeline to Iraq.

IranPipelineToIraqOfficials said Iran was advancing in plans to open a 97-kilometer section of a gas pipeline. They said the 48-inch pipeline would deliver gas from Iran to Iraq by early 2015.

“After the end of cleaning and calibration pigging, 97 kilometers of the pipeline will become operational,” Iranian Gas Engineering and Development Co. managing director Alireza Gharibi said on Aug. 22.

The pipeline, fed by the South Pars gas field, was deemed as part of an agreement to supply 25 million cubic meters of gas per day to Iraq.

Officials said the first phase of the project, expected to garner $3.7 billion a year in revenues, was planned for seven million cubic meters.
