Iran has given the UN nuclear watchdog information about its nuclear past, a step forward in potentially meeting a condition for sanctions relief under a deal reached with world powers last month.
In addition to the July 14 nuclear deal, which offers Iran relief from sanctions in exchange for curbing its nuclear program, Iran also signed a deal with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to resolve questions about the possible military dimensions of its previous nuclear activities.
The IAEA said in a statement on August 15 that Iran had met a deadline by providing an “explanation in writing and related documents.”
The IAEA can ask Iran for more information by October 15, in order to be able to write a final report by the end of 2015.
Full sanctions relief will take place once the IAEA says Iran has answered questions about its nuclear past and complied with measures to shrink its current nuclear program.
