Iran deal: Political victory, PR disaster for Obama

President Barack Obama may have won the political fight on the Iran nuclear deal, but he is losing big time on the public relations front, according to a new Pew Research Center poll.

The poll found that just 21 percent of Americans support the deal. The Pew poll was conducted on the same day Obama coaxed the 42nd Senate Democrat to support the deal, meaning a resolution by Congress to disapprove the deal will likely never reach his desk.

Support for the deal among Americans has dropped significantly since July, when a Pew poll found 33 percent supported it and 45 percent opposed it. Support fell to 21 percent in the most recent poll despite an aggressive summer PR push by the White House.

The poll found that among those who say they have heard at least a little about the Iran deal, 57 percent disapprove compared to just 27 percent who approve.

Support for the deal declined across the ideological spectrum. Even among Democrats, support fell from 50 percent to 42 percent over the summer.

The PR push by the White House may even have had the reverse effect as intended as the Pew poll found the number of Americans who say they haven’t heard anything about the deal increased from 21 percent to 30 percent.
