Iran calls missile factory explosion an accident; details of blast unclear

A deadly explosion at an Iranian missile factory on Nov. 12 that claimed 17 lives was most likely caused by the mishandling of fuel, although details of the blast remain a mystery and sabotage cannot be ruled out.

The Institute for Science and International Security posted a satellite photo of an Iranian military base showing extensive damage.

Reports indicate that the Iranians were testing a missile engine when the explosion occurred. Iran is known to be developing long-range missiles.

Iranian Maj. Gen. Hasan Firouzabadi, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told Iranian state media that the accidental blast at an Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps base had “no connection with Israel and America and can only cause a delay in the production of a research product which will serve as a powerful fist to the mouth of arrogant and usurper regimes.”

The blast took place at a military barracks in Bidganeh Village in Malard. Seventeen people were killed.
