Iran signaled its support for a United Nations plan to end the four-year war in Syria that was proposed by Russia.

Teheran on Aug. 20 said it welcomed the plan, adding that President Bashar Assad’s regime needed to be directly involved.

Iran has also been actively consulting with Assad and with top Russian officials in the aftermath of the announcement of the nuclear agreement with the West.

“This new plan is seen as a step by regional and international players toward a better understanding of the reality on the ground and on the political level,” Iranian foreign ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said, according to Iranian news agency ISNA.

“The people and government of Syria have the key role in this process,” she added.

Iran is one of Assad’s few remaining allies and continues to provide him with cash and military support from Lebanon-based terror proxy Hizbullah.

The peace initiative, adopted by the UN Security Council on Aug. 16 and set to begin in September, would set up four working groups to address safety and protection, counterterrorism, political and legal issues and reconstruction.

The Security Council mandated all sides work for an end to the war by “launching a Syrian-led political process leading to a political transition that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people.”

The UN plan also mentions the creation of “an inclusive transitional governing body.”
