The UN nuclear watchdog says it has made “limited” progress in its probe into the military potential of Iran’s nuclear program and needs greater cooperation from Tehran.

Yukiya Amano, director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said at a conference in Washington on March 23 that Iran had been cooperative with the IAEA in implementing an interim deal curbing its nuclear program.

But he said there had been difficulties attempting to clarify the possible military dimensions of Iran’s nuclear material and added that “we are still not in a position to conclude that all nuclear material in Iran [has a]…peaceful purpose.”

The IAEA is investigating alleged explosives tests being carried out in Iran and other activities that could be used to develop nuclear weapons.

The IAEA inquiry is running in parallel with talks between Iran and six world powers to limit Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for relief from economic sanctions.
