SEOUL — North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has conducted another military reshuffle, the third in a year, a sign that the young leader is still struggling to bring the powerful military under his command.
Kim Kyok-Sik, one of the country’s most hawkish military leaders, is believed to have stepped down as the chief of the General Staff of the People’s Army, just three months after assuming the post, according to government officials and sources in Seoul.
Kim has vanished from public view since he attended a meeting to mark the 60th anniversary of the July 27 armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War. He did not appear at a high profile soceer match on Aug. 28, attended by Kim Jong-Un and top military leaders.
“We believe that Kim Kyok-Sik has been replaced by Ri Yong-Gil, the chief of operations for the Army General Staff, and we are closely watching developments,” a government official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
