The sources said Habib was abducted and tortured to death by Al Qaida-aligned rebels.

“He went missing for eight months and was found a week ago,” a source said.

Hizbullah has acknowledged the death of Habib, said to have been a leading commander in Syria. As early as May 2013, Hizbullah declared the 30-year-old Habib a “martyr.”

The sources said Hizbullah has deployed more than 10,000 fighters in Syria. The Iranian-sponsored proxy was said to have lost up to 1,000 fighters, most of them in 2013.

Habib was said to have led Hizbullah forces in the Syrian province of Homs in June 2013. The sources said the commander, also known as Abu Ali Reza, was captured by Sunni rebels, stabbed to death and buried under a hill.

Hizbullah has been targeted in both Syria as well as in Lebanon. On Jan.
2, at least five people were killed in the latest car bombing of a Hizbullah
stronghold in Beirut.

“The blast resulted from around 20 kilograms of explosives that were
spread inside a dark olive green Grand Cherokee SUV carrying the license
plate 341580/J,,” the Lebanese Army said. “An investigation is underway to
determine the bombing method.”
