GAZA CITY — Hamas has disclosed plans to expand its sea port for passenger travel.

A Hamas ministerial committee said the Gaza City port would be prepared to accept passenger vessels. The panel said the port would serve as a gateway for Palestinians to leave the Gaza Strip.

“We are taking the necessary measures to allow maritime transport and to prepare for the construction of a port, which will link Gaza with the outside world,” committee spokesman Ala Al Batta said.

On Jan. 25, the panel released Hamas plans to expand the role of the Gaza port. The plans included a shuttle to transport Palestinian students as well as those sent abroad for medical treatment.

Hamas has long demanded the expansion of the port. So far, the port was restricted to fishing boats, limited to six nautical miles from the Mediterranean coast.

In another development, the Economy Ministry approved the import of Israeli products in the Gaza Strip. Officials said this would mark the first authorized entry of Israeli goods since 2009.

“We decided to allow [Israeli] products to enter so that the market is not hindered and so products are available,” Economy Ministry official Imad Al Baz said.
