The casualties, acknowledged by Hamas, were said to have included military commanders.

On April 16, the Gaza Health Ministry said three people were killed and five injured in an explosion in Khan Yunis. Ministry spokesman Ashraf Al Qedra provided few details.

“This was a mysterious explosion,” Qedra said.

Palestinian sources said the casualties and injured were all members of Hamas’ military wing. They said the explosion appeared to stem from weapons tests or training in an underground facility.

Last month, a Hamas commander, Ibrahim Al Ghoul was killed in an
explosion in Rafah, along the border with Egypt. The sources said Al Ghoul
was believed killed during a Hamas explosives course.
