In a surprise move, a senior Russian official said on March 14 that the country may allow NATO to use an air base in southern Russia as a hub to transport supplies to Afghanistan.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also said that it might not be wise for NATO to pull out of Afghanistan too soon.
Noting that the proposal must receive parliamentary approval, Lavrov said that allowing NATO to use the base was good for Russia’s “national interest.”
In a speech to Russia’s Parliament, Lavrov urged lawmakers and the Cabinet to approve the measure, calling it “a way to help those who are eliminating terrorism threats and drug trafficking in Afghanistan.”
He noted that “we are helping the NATO coalition for our own national interest.”
