Gas pipeline to Israel and Jordan bombed for sixth time this year

CAIRO — Egypt’s natural gas pipeline to neighboring Israel and
Jordan has again been attacked despite pledge to secure it.

The Arab Gas Pipeline was blown up in the Sinai Peninsula on Nov. 10 in
the sixth such attack in 2011. Security sources said at least two bombs were
detonated by remote control in a section of the pipeline in northern Sinai
near El Arish.

“This was a major attack and repairs will require some time,” a security
source said.

The attack came in wake of Egyptian government pledges to bolster
security around the pipeline, which supplies the majority of gas to Israel
and Jordan.

Egypt, which has demanded a doubling of the price of gas, said
authorities installed alarms as well as launched organized patrols in and
around the pipeline.
