“We intervened in Syria… yesterday evening with a strike on an oil supply center near Deir Ezzor on the border between Iraq and Syria,” French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told journalists at a forum on African peace and security in Dakar, Senegal on Nov. 9.

French President Francois Hollande said on Nov. 6 that military operations would be expanded to include “all those sites from which terrorists could threaten our territory.”

Hollande also said France would deploy its nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to assist with operations against ISIL in Syria and Iraq.

The Nov. 8 attack on ISIL’s oil facility was France’s third wave of air strikes in Syria since joining the U.S.-lead coalition in September. France said its two previous waves of air strikes targeted training camps for jihadists who were suspected of planning terror attacks in France.
