France is clearly caught between a rock and a hard place on its scheduled delivery of two Mistral-class helicopter carriers to Russia.
The carriers are being outfitted at a time when the entire Western world is adding further sectoral and financial sanctions against Russia for its role in the unrest and human tragedies in Ukraine.
In June 2011, France signed a $1.6 billion deal to build the two vessels for Russia’s Pacific Fleet. The first one, the Vladivostok, is scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2014 and the second in 2015.
But since February, Russia has been instigating and supporting unrest in East Ukraine and in March annexed Ukraine’s Crimea causing an international uproar of outrage and condemnation.
