WASHINGTON — Iraq’s autonomous region of Kurdistan has undergone
satellite topography mapping in the search for energy.
kurdistan_mapCanada’s WesternZagros Resources has overseen the completion of
satellite topography mapping of an energy block in Kurdistan. The target was the Garmian block, which encompasses 1,780 square kilometers. and also includes Russia’s Gazprom.

WesternZagros, which operates Gamian, contracted Canada’s PhotoSat
Information to use two satellites to draft contours for the maps. Executives
said the maps and photos would be used for seismic surveys and field
development.

“Based on comparisons between the satellite topographic mapping and
thousands of ground survey points on similar projects, the accuracy of the
satellite topographic mapping is expected to be about 30 centimeters,”
PhotoSat said on May 14.
