CAIRO — Egypt has reported its largest seizure of explosives
destined for the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

Entrance to the Suez Canal tunnel.

Officials said security forces captured a truck with one ton of
explosives earlier this month. They said the truck was stopped at a checkpoint at a tunnel under the Suez Canal on the way to the Sinai Peninsula.

“The truck driver was arrested and interrogated on the origin of the
explosives and their final destination,” an official said.

A senior official, Adel Rifat, security commander of Suez, confirmed the seizure. Rifat said this marked the largest confiscation of explosives
headed for Sinai and the Gaza Strip.

Officials said the Hamas regime has intensified orders for weapons,
munitions and explosives in wake of the missile war with Israel in November 2012. They said at least five tons of explosives along with scores of missiles, rockets and mortars were seized in Sinai since November.

The two main sources of weapons for the Gaza Strip were identified as
Libya and Sudan. Officials said some of the missiles headed for Gaza
included the Iranian-origin Fajr-5 as well as variants of the U.S. Stinger.
