CAIRO — Egypt’s military has been interrogating ousted President
Mohammed Morsi over his ties to the Hamas regime in the Gaza Strip.

Egypt’s official Middle East News Agency said Morsi has been detained
for 15 days amid interrogation of the ex-president’s relations with Hamas.

The United States and Turkey have called on Egypt’s military to release Morsi. On July 26, the United Nations joined this demand.

“Morsi and Muslim Brotherhood leaders currently in detention should be released or have their cases reviewed transparently without delay,” UN
secretary-general Ban Ki-moon said.

Egyptian officials said interrogators sought to learn whether Hamas participated in the attacks on Egyptian police stations and prisons during the revolt against then-President Hosni Mubarak in January and February 2011.

“[Morsi was involved in] collaboration with Hamas to undertake aggressive acts in the country, attacking police facilities, officers and soldiers,” MENA, quoting an indictment, said on July 26.

Morsi’s interrogation came amid the worst unrest since his ouster on
July 3. On July 27, at least 74 people were killed in clashes between
Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood and security forces.

“Innocent blood was spilled,” Brotherhood spokesman Ahmed Aref said.

Morsi has been under arrest since the military coup against the
Brotherhood regime. Since then, some 200 people have been killed in clashes
between the Brotherhood and police.

On July 23, an Egyptian court determined that Hamas aided in the
storming of an Egyptian prison in which Morsi was held. Several senior Hamas
members were also freed in the prison attack.

MENA said Morsi was also interrogated by Egyptian Judge Hassan Samir.
The news agency said the ex-president was also accused of abducting military
officers.
