CAIRO — A leading opposition movement has called for the end of U.S.
aid to Egypt as well as the cancellation of its peace treaty with Israel.
The opposition Tamarod movement has posted an online petition that
called for Egypt to reject the $1.55 billion in annual U.S. aid, about 90
percent for Egypt’s military and security forces. The petition also
rejected the U.S.-sponsored Egyptian peace treaty with Israel.

“Following the blatant and repeated U.S. interference in Egypt’s affairs and the U.S. support of terror groups,” the petition read, “I, an Egyptian citizen, demand that the Egyptian regime hold a referendum on two counts:
First, the refusal of U.S. aid, and second, the annulment of peace accords between Egypt and the Israeli entity, including a rephrasing of security agreements so as ensure Egypt’s right to secure its border.”
This marked the second major online petition by Tamarod, which means “rebellion” in Arabic. In June, a Tamarod petition signed by millions called for the ouster of the Muslim Brotherhood regime of President Mohammed Morsi.
The petition against the United States and Israel has been signed by
300,000 people, Tamarod said. The movement did not cite any replacement for
U.S. aid to Egypt.
Tamarod’s opposition to the 1979 peace treaty focused on restrictions on
Egyptian military deployment in the Sinai Peninsula. The petition said the
restrictions. relaxed by Israel over the last two years, have prevented an
all-out Egyptian offensive against Al Qaida-aligned insurgents.
The petition was posted in wake of U.S. measures to protest the Egyptian
military crackdown on the Brotherhood in which nearly 1,000 people were
killed. The measures included the U.S. suspension of delivery of four F-16
Block 50 multi-role fighters and the cancellation of the biannual Bright
Star exercise, expected to take place in September.
Congress has been divided over reducing U.S. military aid to Egypt. Most
of the House and Senate leadership have warned against such a step.
