The government has launched a program to employ solar energy in an effort to expand its electricity supply.

Officials said solar power would be used to provide lighting for major highways in several Egyptian provinces.

“They have already begun using solar energy for this purpose,” Egyptian Local Development Minister Adel Labib said.

In a briefing on Sept. 1, Labib said the province of South Sinai, located in the turbulent peninsula near Israel and the Gaza Strip, was the most advanced in solar energy.

The minister said at least three roads around the South Sinai capital of Sharm e-Sheik — which span 10 kilometers — were illuminated by solar power.
