Egyptian security forces carried out the operation against the Sinai Province jihadists as they hid in a cave in the mountains, according to a report by Reuters. Officials said eight terrorists were arrested in the operation.

The officials said the operation against the ISIL affiliate took place about 40 miles from the site where on Oct. 31 a Russian Airbus 321 airliner was brought down by a bomb planted on the plane, killing all 224 people aboard. Sinai Province jihadists claimed responsibility for the bombing.

Egyptian President Abdul Fatah Sisi has vowed to increase military operations against ISIL terrorists in Sinai.

The ISIL affiliate has been responsible for several deadly attacks against Egyptian security forces over the past two years.
