The Cairo government has overseen the production of two million fuel smart cards for use throughout Egypt.

The government plans to acquire 4.5 million cards to stop smuggling and facilitate rationing.

The smart cards have already been issued to commercial vehicles as well
as fuel stations.

Officials said the Oil Ministry has allocated funding for the training of 8,000 people at 400 gasoline stations.

The smart card program began in July 2013 and included a data base of suppliers.

The program was implemented as Egypt received fuel from such Gulf
Cooperation Council states as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
