Officials said security forces seized two tons of explosives on Feb. 15 near the tunnel that spans the Suez Canal. They said the explosives were meant to be transported through the Sinai Peninsula and to the Gaza Strip. “The driver has been interrogated to learn more details,” an official said.

Officials said this marked one of the biggest shipments of explosives to Sinai and the Gaza Strip.

Over the last month, they said, security forces captured a large amount of explosives, missiles, rockets and other military equipment destined for the Hamas regime.

The United States has supplied a range of equipment to help Egypt track and intercept weapons shipments.

Officials said the equipment has been used to help detect and destroy scores of the estimated 1,200 tunnels between Sinai and Gaza.
