Egypt cancels Israel, resumes gas deliveries to Jordan

AMMAN — Egypt, canceling its multi-year contract with Israel,
has pledged to renew natural gas supplies to Jordan.

A senior Jordanian official said Egypt intends to resume gas deliveries
to Jordan in early May. The official told Jordan’s official Petra news
agency that the Hashemite kingdom would receive 100 million cubic meters of
gas per day.

Jordan has sought an alternative to Egyptian gas amid a spate of attacks
on the Arab Gas Pipeline in the Sinai Peninsula. The pipeline was bombed at
least 14 times over the last year, which shut down the facility for most of
2011.

Egypt was said to supply 80 percent of Jordan’s electricity needs. Over
the last few months, Amman has been purchasing crude oil
from neighboring Iraq as well as negotiating with Qatar for liquefied
natural gas.
