CAIRO — Egypt has reported a Muslim Brotherhood plot against the military-backed regime.

The officials said virtually every major figure, including the president, defense minister and interior minister, were targeted.

“We will not announce the rest of the targeted personalities,” Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim said. “But are protecting them well.”

In a briefing on May 21, Ibrahim said the Brotherhood formed insurgency networks to attack the regime in wake of the military’s ouster of President Mohammed Morsi in July 2013. He cited Ajnad Misr, responsible for a series of bombings, saying the group was formed by the Brotherhood’s Osama Yasmin, a former minister.

“All terrorist groups came from under the mantle of the Brotherhood,” Ibrahim said. “We are doing our best to protect our personnel, but we cannot assign a bodyguard for everyone.”

Officials have expressed concern of mass-casualty attacks during presidential elections, scheduled for May 26-27. They said the military and
security forces were preparing to deploy more than 500,000 troops to protect voters.

“Egyptians will prove to the world that they are able to choose their leader,” Defense Minister Sidqi Sobhi said.
