NICOSIA — The Republic of Cyprus has announced a major offshore
energy discovery.

The Greek Cypriot government has reported a major natural gas discovery
off the coast of Cyprus. Officials said the U.S. firm Noble Energy has found
large quantities of gas at the Cyprus A-1 well in Block 12 in the eastern
Mediterranean.

“This latest discovery in Cyprus further highlights the quality and
significance of this world-class basin,” Noble chairman Charles Davidson
said.

Nicosia said exploratory drilling, which has angered neighboring Turkey,
has resulted in an assessment that Block 12 could contain up to eight
trillion cubic feet of gas. Officials said additional drilling would be
conducted in 2012.
