The UAE military said an unidentified aircraft crashed in Egypt and four crew members were killed. In a statement on Dec. 17, the military said the aircraft crashed during an exercise with Egypt.

“The concerned authorities are investigating the accident,” the UAE military said.

The military’s General Headquarters did not provide details of the exercise between Egypt and the UAE. The statement merely said the joint maneuvers were “routine.”

Over the last four months, Egypt and the UAE have conducted air strikes on Qatari-backed Islamic militias in Libya. Neither Arab state acknowledged attacks around the Libyan capital of Tripoli.

Hours after the UAE announcement, the Egyptian military provided additional details. Egyptian military spokesman Brig. Gen. Mohammed Samir said the aircraft contained two Egyptian and two UAE crew members.

Samir said the crash stemmed from a technical fault in the aircraft. He said the crash took place at 7 p.m., but did not say where the aircraft fell.
