CAIRO — The ousted Muslim Brotherhood has been accused of producing missiles for attacks around Egypt.

Officials said the Brotherhood has established facilities designed to produce missiles and rockets for attacks on the Egyptian government and military.

The officials said the Brotherhood was distributing some of these weapons around such cities as Alexandria, Cairo and Port Said.

“The terrorists have been making these weapons with help from specialists trained in Libya and Pakistan,” an official said.

On March 19, an Egyptian court sentenced 26 Brotherhood fugitives to death upon conviction for attacking the Suez Canal. The defendants were also convicted of producing missiles and explosives for attacks in the canal area.

Officials said the Brotherhood has been working with the Al Qaida-aligned Ansar Beit Al Maqdis in weapons production. On March 19, Egyptian special forces stormed a warehouse north of Cairo that contained an Ansar explosives factory.

The Egyptian troops fought a battle with Ansar gunmen, and eight people,
including a brigadier general and colonel, were killed. Officials said
Ansar, with a significant presence in the Sinai Peninsula, was believed to
have used the stronghold to plan attacks on nearby Cairo.

Ansar claimed responsibility for an attack on a military police
checkpoint near Cairo on March 15 in which six soldiers were killed. Police
said eight Ansar fighters were captured in the March 19 operation, in which
50 kilograms of explosives were seized.

“This is the first time such a large terror cell was captured,” Egyptian
police spokesman Hani Abdul Latif said.
