Continuing purge signals Kim’s fear of a China-backed coup and the return of half-brother Jong-Nam

SEOUL — North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has continued a bloody drive to eliminate followers of his executed uncle, killing and isolating his relatives and associates, according to sources and news reports here.

Meanwhile, the future of Kim’s other potential rival, his elder half-brother, is also in question.

Relatives of Jang Song-Thaek, Kim’s uncle executed in December, including children, have been killed or sent to remote concentration camps, a source close to the North said.

The relatives executed include Jang’s sister Jang Kye-Sun, her husband and Ambassador to Cuba Jon Yong-Jin, and Ambassador to Malaysia Jang Yong-Chol, a nephew of Jang, as well as his two sons, the source said.

Eight more of Jang’s aides were also recently executed, the source said. The eight were involved in manufacturing narcotics at a factory Pyongyang for export overseas, he said.
